Nádler Retrospective

Celebrating the 70th anniversary of the birth of Munkácsy-prized painter István Nádler, Virág Judit Gallery for Contemporary Art proudly presents the artist’s most emblematic works made between 1968 and 2008 including special surprises like geometric statuettes from the 1970s besides his distinctive color field and hard edge paintings.

Nádler’s oeuvre can be divided into several artistic periods, all of them largely influenced by zeitgeist, tradition, music and oriental philosophy. The exhibition aims to present his far flung, but still coherent periods.

István Nádler’ set of motifs derive from distinguished archetypes from art history like the Nike of Samothrace, the Labrys from Crete, folk motifs, or in particular Malevich’s yellow parallelograms, all recurring in Nádler’s painting merged with different painting tendencies.

Nádler’s first major artistic periods include his field trips in Vence and Essen, where he absorbed in Western Europe’s painting completely free from the filter of politics. The exhibition puts great emphasis on this significant and impressive geometric period.

His latest paintings are a sort of synthesis of his oeuvre with meditation, rhythmical changes, expressive color intensity and accented color fields simultaneously emphasised.
