Gábor Király: Reservation

Gábor Király’s reservation is a well-protected, closed area where rare and endangered species live. Robust figures, whose gender is signalled by attributes only, and who are peculiar transitions between the human and animal, the civilized and domestic world. Up until today Király’s style sprang logically; throughout the years he used the tools of primitivism and nativism, with a great amount of irony and humour to portray the 21th century family-man. His visuals are honestly raw ignoring manners, while their elaboration is fine and generous. Király creates the atmosphere of tribal, primitive cultures by the buoyancy of forms, and colours, rich, sprawling flora and painted utensils.

Acrylic paint is what Király still works with typically, but a striking difference in the new works is the reduction of colours. He achieves the detailed, matte surfaces of black-and-white or monochrome pieces by the use of chalk-based acrylic paint below. Reservation extends the boundaries of Király’s usual genres: alongside his classic panel paintings, he created experimental objects and statues.
