Gábor Király: Guests

Gábor Király’s solo exhibition presents his very best pieces created in the past three years. His flat figures painted with coal or vibrating, bright colours strike with immense power, while even in company they seem to be considerably lonely. His wilful characters resignedly bear the burden of civilization on their shoulders.

Up until today Király’s style sprang logically; throughout the years he used the tools of primitivism and nativism, with a great amount of irony and humour to portray the 21th century family-man. His visuals are honestly raw ignoring manners, while their elaboration is fine and generous. His style reflects on art historical traditions, it is reminiscent of Art Brut or Outsider Art. Characteristically it is a ragged, indelicate, and due to its spontaneity a visceral form of art, where the presence of passion and the unconscious are less controlled. By Király’s own account, African American culture of the 1970s and 1980s and the genre of graffiti left a footprint on his colour usage, and compositional structures – by leaving the rules of classic perspective. His materials are often re-used heavy, noble and dense wood plates, once parts of furniture, doors, tables and beds.

The robust figures of Guests, whose gender is signalled by attributes only, are peculiar transitions between the human and animal, the civilized and domestic world. Király creates the atmosphere of tribal, primitive cultures by the buoyancy of forms, and colours, rich, sprawling flora and painted utensils. He portrays - through very personal memories with shocking genuineness – the ordinariness of holidays and as well the rustic, unvarnished reality of our century.
